V-12 Melody Transposition Tolerance in the Human Cortex

Abstract:

Melody perception relies on stable relational representations, allowing most individuals to recognize melodies even after they are transposed. This transposition invariance of melody perception has been demonstrated in numerous behavioral studies, leading us to hypothesize that certain brain regions exhibit tolerance to transposition when processing melodies. To test this, we conducted the melody discrimination task and employed an event-related adaptation approach and a multivariate pattern cross-classification (MVCC) analysis. As predicted, we identified clusters in the right superior temporal gyrus (STG) and the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) that adapted when participants heard both original and transposed versions of melodies. Also, ROI-based and searchlight-based cross-classification analyses revealed that BOLD patterns in the bilateral precentral gyrus (PreCG), left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), left inferior parietal lobule (IPL), right angular gyrus (AG), and right STG demonstrated melody transposition tolerance. These results suggest that such tolerance is present throughout the auditory-to-motor music processing network.
