Abstract:
Introduction: As research into the neurological benefits of music advances, music therapists need increased knowledge and experience interacting with neuroimaging data. With preparation, music therapists can bring pragmatic expertise to clinical studies and enhance the translational process of mechanistic research. Thus, music therapy students need experience with medical and/or imaging devices.
Methods: We provided a bounded course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) involving a music-listening based research question with outcome measures including Frontal Alpha Asymmetry calculated from EEG signal using an Emotiv EPOCH+ headset, preprocessed with EEGLAB and mapped using a custom ShinyApp application. Additionally, we collected program evaluation outcomes regarding students’ experiences using the EEG headset and other biosensors.
Results: Respondents (N = 5) reported several strong, positive outcomes relating to the research process and motivation for conducting research in the future. Respondents qualitatively reported increased interest and confidence in reading and doing research as well as personal investment in the project, and that, because of taking this course, they were more likely to do research in the future, including master’s level research. Two research assistants shared narratives of their experiences with the project, identifying deepened understanding of research concepts through data collection and preparation stages, increased awareness of neuronal responses to participants’ self-selected music, and appreciation of accessibility of the software and devices.
Discussion/Conclusion: Students reported increased competence and motivation after engaging with this CURE involving EEG and biosensors. We will continue to collect student feedback in future CUREs and develop formal lab manuals for music therapy educators.
