Abstract:
This review article explores the use of music as a therapeutic intervention for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), focusing on the methodological approaches employed since the introduction of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders III (DSM-III). Through a desk-based research approach, this article synthesizes findings from existing literature, identifies methodological trends, and highlights gaps in current research. The review emphasizes the need for more diverse research methodologies and advocates for future studies that incorporate innovative technologies and participant-centred approaches. The therapeutic potential of music in improving emotional regulation, social interaction, and quality of life for individuals with ASD is underscored, with recommendations for expanding the scope and inclusivity of future research.
